Backcountry Skiing in Oregon's Wallowas

Backcountry skiing in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, which is located in northeastern Oregon, offers some of the most challenging and rewarding skiing in the Pacific Northwest. The Wallowa Mountains are known for their steep, rugged terrain and deep snowpack. The main access points to backcountry skiing near Joseph, OR is at Salt Creek Sno-Park, Hurricane Creek, Ferguson Ridge Ski area, and the Wallowa Lake Trailhead.

The best time to go backcountry skiing in the Wallowa Mountains is typically from January to April. However, the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable, so skiers should always check the forecast and be prepared for changing conditions.

What is amazing about backcountry skiing in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, besides its beauty, is its solitude. Don’t be surprised if you run into 0 people on the trail. I spent three bluebird days last year touring and skiing “cold smoke” and didn’t see one person.

Backcountry skiing in the Eagle Cap does have its challenges though. 1- There can be some crazy weather swings, it can go from - 10 degrees to above freezing real quick or vice versa. 2. You have to burn a lot of calories to get to really anything. The mountains are steep, and motorized vehicles/snow mobiles are not allowed in the wilderness area. This combination really stretches out your tours.
